Light on Eyes

February 5th, 2010

You may recall the book, Light on Yoga, but today’s post is about light on our eyes.

One of my favorite things to spoil my students with in class is an eye pillow during Savasana. In my own practice, it just seems to settle me in to my relaxation a bit deeper, but it also assists in resting my hard working eyes.

Our eyes work really hard for us on a daily basis. They are small but mighty organs! Here is a list of things our eyes do for us each and every day, all day while they are open that you might not even think about:

  • Work with our brains to tell us the size, shape, color and texture of an object
  • Tell us how close the object is, whether it is still or moving
  • They work with each other, but also with the brain, muscles, and nerves to provide us visual images and messages
  • They constantly adapt to our changing environment; i.e. light or darkness

When you place an eye bag on your eyes, either during Savasana or any other time, you are helping your eyes rest with ease, helping to relax the muscles of the eyes and activating your parasympathetic nervous system. It’s a Win-Win!

So, now the big, fun news! Many of you ask me where do I get the eye bags I use in class from. And (drum roll please)…..the answer is Deb Smith in Memphis, TN. A couple of years ago, I was traveling to see my mom in Memphis and of course, checked out a yoga studio that I hadn’t been to while I was there. I was on the major look out for a new eye bag because I lost my other one, but I am very picky. They can’t be too big, have to have a great, relaxing smell, the whole package. While at Better Bodies Yoga I found a wonderful, amazing eye bag and of course bought it. When I returned to Florida, I loved it so much that I called the studio and asked them where they got it from and they gave me Deb’s contact information.

I called her and she was so excited, I ended up buying 15 eye bags to use when I teach yoga. Just for each of you.

She calls her eye bags The Repose Healing Eye Pillow and describes it as a sensory relaxation tool used for easing stress and tension, while allowing you to rest, recharge or sleep. Filled with flaxseed, lavender, pineapple, sage, thyme, mint, eucalyptus and/or rosemary. This pillow applies gentle acupressure to tired eyes and facial muscles, while the aromatherapy induces an aura of comfort and calm. The luxurious fabric is cool to the touch allowing the Eye Pillow to drape and conform to the contours of your face, providing welcome relief for headaches, sleeping difficulties and stress or eye puffiness.  Deb actually really grows all of her herbs she uses to make the eye pillows in her own garden. You can’t get any fresher than that.

I have been thinking about purchasing an eye pillow. I sometimes get headaches and I think one of these bags cooled in the fridge would feel amazing and bring some much needed relief. Thanks for reminding me to get one.

I was first introduced to the awesome feeling of eye pillows in your class Tiffany! Like you, I found the cool, light pressure, and fragrance comforting and extremely helpful when relaxing in savasana! I bought myself one right after your class, and sadly, it is pretty much worn out! I would welcome the opportunity to try one created by Deb!
PS-The mat spray would be wonderful too, as my mat…well it smells like….feet!

    Beautiful web site!

I should have realized by now, that yoga mats need to be cleaned! duh…I guess having a master degree doesn’t mean anything in this regard, lol. I would love to win the mat spray and the eye bags because they really do help sooth my tired eyes. I am able to focus more on going to my very soothing and serene place to see my dearly departed Mom,the love of my life, during meditation in shavasana when I use one. Thanks to Tiffany, I get to each and every Yoga class.

Tiffany, your workshop tonight was amazing! Thanks for helping me relax after a really stressful day. I was first introduced to eye pillows by you during your Intro to Yoga series. I had no idea how stress relieving it would be.

I would love a handmade eye pillow, especially if it’s similar to the ones you use in class. My job is stressful, and I find myself coming home after a long day worn out. Having an eye pillow would be a nice way to decompress. Sadly, I have never cleaned my mat :( It would be nice to start off with the right cleaner. :)

Thanks Tiffany for all you do….and being yourself.

hi tiffany, thanks for visiting my blog! i had a yoga instructor a few years ago who would put eye pillows on us during shavasana. it was the most amazing feeling – so comforting & soothing. i would love to be able to treat myself to that feeling. i just started a new job & the eye pillow could be a great way to relax after work. also, i know my yoga mat needs to be cleaned because it’s a light tan color… i can see the dirt, yuck! i think i would be more excited about rolling out my mat if it was squeaky clean! thanks again, happy valentine’s day. xo, kaileenelise

Hi! I really love coming to your class! I’m relatively new but so far have found your Thurs. and Sat. flow classes to be my favorite. I’m not the best at yoga but I try hard! I have three kids we adopted, teach school full time, and am in grad school (3 classes). One thing I really struggle with during class is quieting my mind. I really look forward to that eye bag at the end of class! The smells and the light pressure make me forget everything! Also, I would love that mat spray because mine is – well it’s getting just plain scary! :) Happy Valentine’s Day.
